The 1940 Packard known as the Nineteenth Series. 160 bhp, 356 cu. in. L-head inline eight-cylinder engine, three-speed manual transmission, independent front suspension and live rear axle, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 138″
By 1940, Packard’s model line had come to include the mainstream One-Ten (formerly the Packard Six) and One-Twenty models, topped by the senior Super Eight One-Sixty and Custom Super Eight One-Eighty lines. While the legendary Packard Twelve was discontinued after 1939, the top Packard engine choice was now the 356 cubic inch straight eight. With a 160-horsepower rating, smooth operation and prodigious torque, the eight more than capably filled the Twelve’s shoes. This engine was now standard on the One-Sixty and One-Eighty models, which rode a variety of wheelbase lengths and a wide variety of elegant body designs.
Known as the Nineteenth Series, the 1941 Packard model line continued the styling innovations that were pioneered during the prior year, along with a variety of detail updates. With their robust power train, independent front suspension and soft, smooth ride, Packard’s Super Eight One-Sixty models remain highly desirable today for their drive ability and usability, in addition to their high quality and stately character.
This Packard was discovered amongst many other well stored Original Packard’s , True epitome of barn find. A gentleman by the name of Lewis Paler of Dallas Pennsylvania had an addiction for low mileage original Packards. During the 1960′s and 70′s he was gathering up significant original Packards and hoarding them away. Surprisingly only a few in the area where aware of this stash of Packards. Mr. Paler passed and the cars where left to his children to disperse. This 1941 160 amongst five others where hand picked during the dispersal of this incredible collection. The car was purchased in 2004 by a discreet and knowledgeably collector.His intention with this fabulous Packard was to retain its spectacular originality while sympathetically prepare the car mechanically for CARavan and Classic car touring. And that task was completed to the upmost perfection. They sourced out an original and correct for the car Packard Overdrive and installed it onto this forma sedan, this was the only feature missing from this classic to make it fully tour ready. Mechanically the car was prepared front to rear , all brake components replaced, fuel system from carb to new correct tank, water pump, radiator, wiring back to original and authentic where needed. Absolutely tweaked to mechanic perfection. After all of preparation completed the car made its way on the Classic Car Club of America’s International CARavan to Alaska and back. It was reported the car performed flawlessly and was actually thankful be back in service. After the mammoth tour the owner continued to do other tours and Caravans sanctioned by the National clubs a as well as showed the car at numerous recognized shows where it was always well received as an outstanding Historic Vehicle of Preservation as which it is.
Today the car is still an incredible original example with 90% original paint, and the finish is exceptional with excellent coverage depth and amazing shine. The chrome and stainless are all original and show extremely well. The Packard V’d grill with thermostat operating louvers is exceptional as the stainless band belt line and fender hashed moldings. The wheels are original with Packard 160 center caps and original trim rings. The Interior is absolutely spectacular , again original throughout including seat upholstery , high grade Packard carpet , headliner door panels etc. These components are in amazing original condition, the rear passenger compartment is cavernous , complete with fold up foot rest and highly detailed lap rope and passenger pulls. The dash is outstanding , all original plastics all fully intact , chrome and stainless trim near perfect, the wood graining is all original and stunning, great color and fully vibrant as are all of the wood grained garnish moldings throughout, simply stunning. Under the hoods is all original and untouched, just as one would hope to see it. Original Packard air breather etc etc. The cowl plate is in place and identified the selling dealer as North Hampton Motors Sales of Easton PA.
All and all this was a signifigant “Barn Find” that was so well preserved that it has been able to be left ALL ORIGINAL and mechanically was prepared to perfection while leaving all attributed of originality in place. The file indicates that over a 7 year period the car was serviced by RM Restoration with service record totaling over $40,000.00. The owner was fastidious to the working, driving and perfect operation of this Packard. And we can attest to that by ourselves enjoying this time capsule that truly does drive and handle not unlike a late model car. The ’160′ series identifying 160 Horse power in this example is certainly the right fit when it comes to power and pull. This Packard pulls through the three speeds + Over drive with ease and surprising power. To see this fine original example would truly impress you , to then experience the drive would seal the deal. This is truly an exceptional example throughout.
Mechanically prepared to drive from coast to coast , and with such ultra low original miles with only 28,409. This Full Classic is the true epitome of HPOF awards, Historic Preservation of Original Features a class that has become so needed and respected by the masses that even Pebble Beach has such a class.
